March Spending

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a good weekend! I feel like we got a good amount done, which is always good! We also had our first 60 degree day yesterday, so I think that made the weekend successful :)

Can you believe March is over already?! The year is going by so fast! But that means summer will be here soon and hopefully some nice weather :) I decided to link up with Fran for her Monthly Budget post. I've had fun reading her (and other's) posts and decided this would be a good month to join in myself. I feel like I got a lot of clothes, but between sales, coupons, and gift cards, I didn't do too bad!

1 & 2. Tanks (Target): $2.80 each x 2 = $5.60
3. Yellow shirt (Goodwill): $4.99
4. Striped shirt (Goodwill): $2.99
5. Gray long sleeve (Gap): $3.58
6 & 7. T-shirts (Target): $3.50 each x 2 = $7
8. (not pictured) Work-out tank (Old Navy): $8.07

9. Snakeskin flats (Gap): $9.58
10. Gold flats (Old Navy): $6.73

11. White blazer (Goodwill): $8.99
12. Striped blazer (Clothes Mentor): $4.90
13. Blue blazer (Clothes Mentor): $4.90
14. Brown blazer (Vintage Village): $0.99

Yikes, I bought 14 things! That is definitely more than I've gotten in one month in a long time! But the total for all these things was $68.32. I used a gift card I got from Inbox Dollars for $26.77 of this total, so total out of pocket was $41.55. Not bad!

By the way, does anyone have a good iphone app for picture collages? I made these with Pic Collage, but I'm not really happy with the limited choices in collage options.

Pinspired: White Blazer and Chambray

Happy Friday! I decided to share with you an outfit inspired by Pinterest. I don't know about you, but lately I've been feeling really blah about all my clothes. I'm sure it has to do with the weather- we're in that in-between time from winter to spring; I'm sick of all my winter clothes but it's not warm enough yet to break out my cute spring/summer looks. So to find new ways to wear some of my pieces, I turn to Pinterest! Here is a look inspired by my new white blazer and my trusty chambray:

white blazer + chambray + black trousers

As I'm sure everyone else does, I love my chambray! But I always feel like it's too casual to wear to work on it's own, so I'm always trying to find ways to wear it to work. I think this outfit fit the bill! And hubby said he really liked this outfit too :)

Ooo, and look at the new gift I got from my brother! He's a manager at Coach in Chicago, so he basically gets everything at a steal...

It's called the Borough Bag and based on the 5 Boroughs in New York, there are 5 main compartments! This will be perfect to use for work! Thanks John! (Oh, and he [and Maureen!] has a blog about movies you can find here!)

Blazer: Sonoma via Goodwill
Chambray: Old Navy
Pants: The Limited
Shoes: Target
Bag: Coach via gift
Earrings: The Limited
Bracelet: American Eagle (old!)

Initial Thoughts on Oil Pulling

I'm sure you've all heard about the latest trend in the health world: oil pulling. I've been seeing it all over the internet, TV, and radio. What is oil pulling, you may ask? It is an ancient practice of swishing pure oils in your mouth to help remove toxins from your body. Your mouth is one of the dirtiest places in your body, so it makes it an ideal place to do this type of detoxification.

I know what you may be thinking: Gross, right? Well, I initially thought so too. But just check out some of the health benefits from oil pulling:
  • Strengthens teeth, gums, and jaw
  • Prevention of diseases of the mouth, such as cavities and gingivitis
  • Helps to prevent bad breath
  • Whiter teeth
  • Increased energy
  • Decreased headaches
  • Clearer skin
  • Supports kidney function
  • Reduces insomnia
  • Relieves hangovers
Pretty cool, right? I've seen a few variations on the method of oil pulling, but here's the basic procedure:
  1. Put 1-2 teaspoons (I've seen up to a tablespoon) of vegetable-based oil in your mouth. I use coconut, but you can apparently also use sesame or olive. I put it in as a solid and let it melt in my mouth, but you could also melt it before.
  2. Swish for 20 minutes. This may seem like a long time, but I do it while I'm in the shower in the morning or doing something else to take my mind off it.
  3. Spit it into the trash, not the sink as it could plug up your water lines.
  4. Rinse your mouth with warm water to get the rest of the oil out.
  5. Brush your teeth.
Right away in the morning is the ideal time to do this, although I've done it a couple times at night just so I can stay in the habit of doing it everyday.

I've only been doing it for a week, so I'm no expert. But I have noticed my teeth are getting whiter. Honestly, if this is the only effect I see from this process, I'll take it. It saves a TON of money on over-the-counter whitening systems or procedures at your dentist. My teeth also get super sensitive when I use these products, and I'm not noticing that with the oil pulling.

I'm hoping that the more I do oil pulling, the more results I will notice. It's only been a week after all! I will keep updating you from time to time on what I find.

Have any of you tried oil pulling? What are some of the results you've gotten from it (if any)?

I am not a doctor, and I'm not guaranteeing these results. I'm just relaying what I've heard/read and what I've personally experienced.

Thrifting Finds

It's been awhile since I've gone thrifting, but I managed to go twice over the weekend! Once to Goodwill and once to a local thrift store (don't remember the name). Here's a peek at what I tried on. These first few pieces are from Goodwill:

1. This is originally Banana Republic from a couple years ago. I love all things mustard yellow, so this came home with me. Price was $4.99.

2. I don't remember what this brand was. It was a cute top and I liked the pattern, but I don't want to buy any more long-sleeve tops right before the warmer months, so I passed on this.

3. This is originally Gap. Just a simple t-shirt, but I love the stripes and it's something I could probably pair a bunch of ways as the weather is starting to warm up. It was only $2.99, so I jumped on it!

4. I've been on the lookout for some blazers to add to my wardrobe. I don't remember the brand of this one, but it just wasn't doing it for me. As you can see from the second picture, it was much too big around the middle.

5. I did luck out with this blazer. It is a Sonoma, priced at $8.99 it will be a great blazer to wear in the Spring and Summer, especially at work when the air conditioning makes it cooler inside. You can see how I wore this, along with the yellow shirt, here! (Not sure what my face is doing...)

6. I think this shirt was from J. Crew, or The Loft. I love the stripes, but the weight of the material was a bit too heavy and warm to wear much longer this year. Oh well.

These next pieces are from the local thrift store, next to the movie theater:

1. This blazer is from The Limited. It fits really well, and is in really good shape! There are a few stray threads I need to cut, but other than that, I think this will make a great addition to my work wardrobe! The price was marked $7.99, but all green-tagged items were $0.99 that particular day! You guys, that's like 99% off original price! Score!!

2. I found another blazer, originally from Target. It looked cute on the hanger, but I didn't like the one-button look. So back it went.

3. I think this is either Gap, The Limited, or The Loft. Again, it looked cute on the hanger, but I didn't like how the high collar looked.

4. This shirt was from Gap. I really liked the pattern, but it was way too big around the waist.

5. I liked the pattern and the colors of this tank top. It fit well too, but I just wasn't feeling it.

6. This was Gap/The Limited/The Loft. It was cute on the hanger, but I really don't like collars that come up this far on my neck. It just feels too restricting.

So in total, I walked away with 4 items for a total of $17.96! Not too bad :) What are some of your favorite thirift-store finds?

Weekend Happenings/Thrifted Outfit

Hello bloggy friends! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Here's what we were up to:

After work and lunch, I went to the gym for awhile (completely dead there at that time!).

For dinner, a group of us went to a local church's fish fry. It was so busy! I guess it's rated one of the best in the Twin Cities, so we had to wait awhile before we could even get in to buy our tickets! It was pretty good, though. We had a couple drinks after and chatted for awhile.

I woke up with a headache :/ (probably attributed to the later than normal bedtime) I did manage to go thrifting and grocery shopping before I crashed and took a nap for the rest of the afternoon. (Aren't naps a wonderful thing?)

We decided to rent a couple movies from Redbox to watch with dinner (American Hustle and Equilibrium). American Hustle didn't work, so we watched the other one, then called it a night.

We went to church in the morning, then ran some errands after. I went to the gym (is it weird that while on the tredmill I watch the Food Network??).

We have a collection of 16 free tickets to a local movie theater, so we decided to redeem two of them and saw Frozen. This is a cool movie theater in which they show 'older' movies and have a full menu. We got waffle fries, seasoned sour cream, a beer, and wine. Yum.

Another reason we like going to this theater is that it has a neat little thrift store right next door. Well, we haven't been there in months, and come to find the store doubled in size! I'll show you what I found in tomorrow's post.

Homemade pizza and How I Met Your Mother rounded out our weekend. (Is anyone else excited to see how they are going to do the finale?)

Here's a couple of pieces I got from thrifting on Saturday. I was so excited to wear them, I washed them right away and wore them yesterday to church and our outings:

Blazer: Goodwill
Top: Goodwill
Jeans: Gap
Boots: Just Fab
Purse: Old Navy (old!)
Bracelets: Gifts
Necklace: Farmer's Market

I tried my hand at stacking my bracelets. I really like the coral and turquoise combination of the two, plus it gives a nice pop against the white and yellow. Same with the necklace. Hubby loves it, but I never know what tops to pair it with. I thought this fit well with the V in the blazer.

I've been keeping my eye out for a blazer, and this one is perfect for the transition into Spring/Summer!

Style Swap: Chambray and Mustard

Happy Friday! We've made it through another week! I'm linking up for the first time for Style Swap with Ginny and Jenn! I've been looking at these posts since they first started the linkup, but finally decided to get off my butt and join in the fun! (It's hard not having internet at home and doing this blog mostly from work- there's so much more I'd do, but I just don't have the time!)

Apparently this exact outfit is a go-to, because I wore pretty much the same thing a couple weeks ago... womp womp. Anywhoo, Ginny at My New Favorite Outfit did a post a couple months ago on styling boyfriend cardigans and one of her outfits was styled with a chambray, which I thought I could copy and put my own twist on! (because I wear this all the time anyway...)

Instead of leggings, I'm wearing my skinny legging jeans from Gap (my favorite!) and instead of boots, wore my new flats from Gap (they were under $9 after the Friends and Family sale last weekend!) I like the unexpected pop of color the pink in the flats bring :)

Jeans: Gap
Chambray: Old Navy
Cardigan: Target
Flats: Gap
Scarf: Gift
Earrings: The Limited

Hubby said I should do some different poses, so I gave him an over-exaggerated 'blogger' pose. Hot, no?

Leopard and Pink

It's been a long time since I've worn this pink, Gap shirt, so I decided to pull it out on a really nice, Spring day last week. Nothing too fancy, just added a pop with my leopard scarf (which I cannot get enough of!)

Shirt: Gap
Pants: The Limited
Shoes: Gift
Scarf: Plato's Closet

It took me awhile to get into the leopard print trend, but I love it now! Goes to show you should try new trends at least once- you might find something you love!

Zoe wanted to get in on the action too :)

Weekend Happenings/St. Patrick's Day Green

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! Is anyone doing anything fun to celebrate the day? We don't usually do anything- I did buy shamrock shaped cookies at the grocery store :) That's about as much as I do...

Hopefully everyone had a nice, relaxing weekend and are ready for the week ahead! (and the snow?!) Here's what I was up to this weekend:

I ran to Target after work. When hubby came home, we decided to take Zoe for a walk in the local park, because the high was in the 40's. However, the wind was wicked- it felt a ton colder!- and there were huge puddles everywhere from the melting snow! Needless to say, the walk didn't last long and Zoe was a muddy, wet mess when we got home.

For dinner, we went to a local church's Friday fish fry with hubby's parents. It was really good!

I woke up with another headache that knocked me out most of the day :( I did manage to get some grocery shopping done, then I took a nap most of the afternoon. Pretty low key day.

We went to church, then after lunch I went to the gym to work out. I'm trying to run again! I'm doing running/walking intervals to start and hopefully I can work my way up to a 5k this summer! After that, I just did some housework and reading for the rest of the day. Oh, and hubby and his dad worked on installing a fan/vent in our bathroom.

Nothing too exciting, but sometimes it's just nice to veg after a week of work.

Keeping in the St. Patrick's Day mood, here is an appropriate outfit I wore over the weekend:

Shirts: Target
Jeans: Gap
Shoes: Old Navy
Scarf: New York and Co.
Sunglasses: Target
Earrings: The Limited

I love this new top I got from Target! (Although it's already starting to tear in the seam) I decided to pair it with my floral scarf for a Spring feel. Here's how I wore the same top for work a couple weeks ago:

Thrifted Coral Top

I love this top I got from Goodwill last year! It's such a fun, springy color! I wore it last week during one of our (hopefully!) last sub-zero degree days.

I had the problem last time I wore this top here, that I can't decide whether I like it better tucked in or left out like this. What do you think, bloggy friends?

These poor pants don't get enough love. I'm not sure why. I think it's easier for me to dress blacks and grays than browns. I think I wore them once a couple months ago, but I think they've been in my closet for about a year, so I'm trying to bring them in my clothing rotation more.
